We had the most gorgeous weather here in Alabama this weekend and it has me ready for SPRING! We’re almost there, but for now I hope you will get some spring inspiration from this post and many others that are a part of the DIY MY SPRING- Home & Garden Blog Hop presented by Hometalk. There are so many creative and talented bloggers participating! You can find their links at the bottom of this post.
For my project, I created a simple bird silhouette using paper straws! It’s so easy…

Here’s what you’ll need:
- Paper straws
- Printout of the shape you want (you can search for this online)
- Carbon paper
- Hot Glue
- Frame (and paint if you use a thrift store frame like mine)
I found my frame at the thrift store for less than $2. I took out the glass and painted it with Craft Smart chalky paint in Linen (found at Michael’s). Did you know you can buy chalky paint in 2oz. sizes?? This is great for those small projects where you don’t want to invest in a quart of paint. This one only cost me $1.50!!
I used carbon paper to trace the bird shape (just place the carbon sheet under your printout and trace…it’s that simple!) I originally traced mine onto the cardboard that came in the frame, but then I decided why not use the back of the picture that came in the frame. It was white and it I knew it would be the perfect size.
After I traced the bird, I cut out the INSIDE! It is important to cut out the inside of the shape in order to create the silhouette.
I did end up using the cardboard for my straws. I lined them up in the order I wanted and hot glued them onto the cardboard.
Then I placed the cut out of my bird on top of the straws. You can glue this as well but I used mod podge to secure the paper and keep all the little edges flat.
Then I put everything back in the newly painted frame.
Now I have this cute bird silhouette art! 🙂 I kind of have a bird theme going this year and it fits perfectly!
This could be modified to any shape you want and if you are like me it is hard to resist all the cute styles of paper straws out there!
